Colorful Homestead

Raising backyard chickens started off harmless enough, let's get some chickens so we can have fresh eggs.  Fast forward 7 years and you are now strategizing chicken choices based on egg colors, yup that's me your crazy coloured egg enthusiast.

I love the fact that we know where our eggs come from, I love the fact our kids know the chicken cycle of life, I love the fact I can collect beautiful eggs from the coop each day, and who doesn't love a baby chick.

I don't just raise chickens for eggs, I also raise around 22 a year for the freezer, so my family and I can know that our home roasted chicken come from a life of green grass, sun on their feathers and a great life.  I enjoyed the generic meat chicken raising more than I thought I would.  They are comical, sometimes cruel to each other, but generally easy going food machines.  I loved knowing that they spent their days wandering my yard underneath the safety of a trampoline, basking in the sun and not at care in the world.  By the end I was rewarded with big beautiful 8-10 pound chickens that filled my freezer for the seasons ahead.

Are you growing a garden?  Any level of gardening is better than none!  It doesn’t matter how many years you have put your efforts into growing, you always have pit falls and things you would do different.  That’s half the fun.  I always encourage new gardeners who are hesitant to start small, maybe a few patio containers and a box of lettuce.  There is nothing more gratifying than being able to make a full salad out of your own garden.
